Artist biography
Pietro Griffo, the distinguished superintendent of antiquities in Agrigento, is the figure after whom the Regional Archaeological Museum is named. With great tenacity, he personally oversaw the creation of the museum, which was inaugurated in 1967. His contribution was also fundamental to the conservation and enhancement of the artifacts, as demonstrated by the transfer of the famous Telamon from its original site at the Temple of Zeus to the specially designed museum hall, an archaeological operation of great merit. Griffo also proposed his own hypothesis on the placement of the Telamons in 1950. The museum houses historical and archaeological evidence from prehistory to the early Middle Ages in central-southern Sicily.
